Treatment for adults, children and families

“Where you stumble, there lies your treasure. The very cave you are afraid to enter turns out to be the source of what you are looking for.” - Joseph Campbell

Patrick Ringland

BPsych (Hons); MPsych (Clin)

I am a clinical psychologist with over 10 years of experience working with children, adolescents, adults and families. I am also a board-approved supervisor of other psychologist.

According to writer Henry Menken, “For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.”

As psychologists we can be quick to offer advice, or skills and strategies such as mindfulness and thought challenging. I am of the belief that in most cases, if there was a simple solution to longstanding and difficult mental health symptoms, patients would have discovered it already. To offer simple explanations and solutions is to underestimate the difficulty of the problem facing the patient, along with their capacity and intelligence.

Therefore my work is focussed on trying to understand the underlying causes and functions of mental health symptoms so that they can hopefully be resolved in a more comprehensive and enduring way. Engaging in a meaningful course of therapy has the potential to transform not only how our lives are lived, but also how they are experienced, offerring a greater sense of hope, presence, contentment, authenticity and freedom.

Treatment consists of a working partnership where difficulties are safely and supportively explored. I tend to suggest working quite intensively, meeting on a weekly basis or more for the period of treatment. This allows for necessary momentum to develop in the treatment in order to make change, rather than therapy turning into just a ‘check-in’.

I am experienced in the treatment of a range of psychological concerns for both children and adults, with particular specialisation in the following:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Addictions

  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

  • Adolescent mental health

  • Eating disorders

  • Family therapy

  • Psychodynamic psychotherapy
